Great Highway for Everyone

Voters are looking for a safe and sensible solution for the Great Highway. The Great Highway for Everyone Act restores the balanced approach that worked: park on weekends and holidays, transit access on weekdays.
Maintain the park on weekends. Thousands of people enjoy the coastal promenade every weekend, and this measure keeps it exactly as it is. Families, cyclists, and visitors will continue to have car-free access to our beautiful oceanfront when they can use it most.
But on weekdays, working families need options. When the Great Highway is closed seven days a week, 20,000 daily commuters must find other routes. That means neighbors, parents, and working people drive through residential neighborhoods—streets where children play—or through Golden Gate Park instead. Traffic, noise, and safety concerns have increased on streets that were never designed for this volume.
This is the fair and safe solution San Francisco needs. The Great Highway roadway must be maintained for emergency vehicles, so it will always be a paved roadway. Permanent closure put an unfair burden on nearby residents. This is the fair and safe solution San Francisco needs. The Great Highway roadway must be maintained for emergency vehicles, so it will always be a paved roadway. Permanent closure put an unfair burden on nearby residents. It’s time to restore the balance:
  • Keep weekend and holiday park access
  • Restore weekday routes for working families
  • Reduce traffic on residential streets and through Golden Gate Park
